Ubuntu
Ubuntu is an operating system built by a worldwide team of expert developers. It contains all the applications you need: a web browser, office suite, media apps, instant messaging and much more.Ubuntu is an open-source alternative to Windows and Office.

The Ubuntu promise...

* Ubuntu will always be free of charge, along with its regular enterprise releases and security updates

* Ubuntu comes with full commercial support from Canonical and hundreds of companies from across the world

* Ubuntu provides the best translations and accessibility features that the free software community has to offer

* Ubuntu core applications are all free and open source. We want you to use free and open source software, improve it and pass it on.

The Ubuntu OS can be run directly from the CD (albeit with a significant performance loss), allowing a user to "test-drive" the OS for hardware compatibility and driver support. The CD also contains the Ubiquity installer, which then can guide the user through the permanent installation process. CD images of all current and past versions are available for download at the Ubuntu web site.[31] Installing from the CD requires a minimum of 256 MB RAM.

Windows 7 and Ubuntu are both targeted the desktop market to a large extent and have their pros and cons.Let's compare the two Operating Systems based on their features.

Boot up time: This is most discussed issue between the two operating systems. No doubt Windows 7 boots faster than Vista, but Ubuntu 9.10 has a breezy boot up.

Security: Still Windows remains vulnerable spyware and virus attacks.Overall Ubuntu is a highly secured OS. There are abundant ways to avoid spyware on the Linux-based operating system.

Media Player: Windows 7 includes Windows Media Player 12, along with new codecs for playing formats such as H.264, MPEG4-SP, ASP/Divx/Xvid, MJPEG, DV, Advanced Audio Coding (AAC-LC).Ubuntu comes with a VLC player with supports a wide range of codecs that surpasses WMP

Price: Windows 7 comes at a better tag price as compared to Vista. Still Windows price seems a pipe dream when you compare it with Ubuntu that comes at $0.
